Each day at Abu Camp, you are invited to completely immerse yourself in the majestic world of the African elephant and to see the African bush and its wildlife through the eyes of the elephants – by joining the Abu Herd. Form a strong emotional bond with the herd and be both humbled and inspired as you gain a deeper understanding of elephant conservation – the premise on which Abu is based. With the support of your local guide, professional photographer and PhaseOne modular camera equipment, you will learn the tricks of capturing the most incredible wildlife photos live, in the setting of true wilderness.

Morning and evening game drives will take you deep into the heart of the Okavango Delta by road, boat and Mekoro dugout canoe, depending on the seasonality. This scenically splendid concession contains a number of distinct but interwoven ecosystems, from seasonally inundated floodplains, channels and palm islands in the north-east to the dryer Kalahari ‘Sandveld Tongue’ in the west. Here, trees like Kalahari appleleaf and silver terminalia dominate, adding a greater degree of contrast to this unique area. Unlike some of the permanently inundated areas of the Delta, the habitats around Abu Camp offer a wide variety, from open grasslands to secluded island sanctuaries and papyrus-fringed channels. This in turn means that big game is plentiful, allowing for good general game viewing which includes frequent sightings of classic Okavango Delta species such as Cape buffalo, African elephant and red lechwe, alongside southern giraffe, blue wildebeest, tsessebe, and the ubiquitous but beautiful impala. Burchell’s zebra, hippo and warthog are also often seen. Dominant carnivores include lion – which often move through the Concession and can be heard calling at night – and spotted hyaena, with increasingly frequent sightings of resident leopards and packs of Endangered African wild dog. For birding enthusiasts, some 380 different species have been recorded. “Okavango specials” include tiny, jewel-like malachite kingfisher, white-browed coucal, Luapula cisticola, pied kingfisher, rufous-bellied heron and great white egret.

At around 180 000 hectares (445 000 acres) in area, the Abu Concession is situated in one of the most productive areas of the Okavango Delta. Embrace and enjoy every moment of this education.

TOUR LOCATION

Okavango Delta, Botswana

Botswana, Africa

Historically Botswana is one of Africa’s outstanding success stories. Prior to independence in 1966, it was one of the world’s poorest countries, an unexplored land only visited by hardy adventurers. Botswana embarked on innovative and proactive ways to deal with tourism, the second largest export sector after diamonds. The country’s leaders took the view that high quality, low volume tourism was the best way to create a sustainable industry that would employ a large percentage of its people while still preserving the environment. With a population of 2.2 million (reported figures as of 2017), slightly larger than France and almost the size of Texas, the landmass covers 581 730 square kilometres (224 607 square miles), most of which is desert. The capital city is Gaborone, while Maun and Kasane are the safari “hubs”.

Okavango Delta, Botswana

Situated in the northwestern corner of Botswana, the Okavango Delta is a World Heritage Site as it is the largest inland delta in the world. The magnificent Okavango River sprawls out over the dry sands of the Kalahari Desert forming this flourishing waterlogged oasis featuring countless meandering waterways and crystal clear lagoons studded with water lilies, as well as fertile floodplains and reeded islands inhabited with abundant wildlife. The Okavango Delta stretches over 15000 square kilometres. Visitors can enjoy a number of wonderful activities such as game viewing, fishing, bird watching or taking an authentic guided Mokoro excursion through this wetland paradise in a traditional dugout canoe. Commonly spotted animals include: lion, rhino, leopard, giraffe, hippos, elephants, crocodiles and countless species of bird. Behind everything we do there is a purpose, whether it is conserving endangered species, ensuring the benefits of ecotourism reach the people that live in or near the areas in which we operate, or inspiring positive change in the lives of staff, guests and other stakeholders. During your stay, you will have the opportunity to experience this unique ethos through connecting with unspoilt natural environs and wildlife, seeing our conservation initiatives at work, or enjoying cultural encounters with the communities with whom we partner. Out in the wild, the ‘off the vehicle’ experiences are tailored to ensure the most intimate back-to-nature experiences possible, evoking explorations of a bygone era – whether on a guided walking safari, hot-air ballooning or an unforgettable star bed sleep-out. Through these close encounters with the wilderness and the people who live and work in it, we believe that more than 30 000 guests a year are exposed to authentic new ways of viewing the world and our place in it.
Here at Abu Camp, we share the wild places of Africa, while our ultimate goal is to help make a difference to Africa, its people and its wildlife. As a guest, you are already helping us to make a difference. At least 5% of your profit is spent on conservation efforts, with many of our guests supporting one or more of our projects. Recognising that conservation is as much about people as about the environment, the company has pursued important goals through its two non-profit partners, Children in the Wilderness and the Wilderness Wildlife Trust, which have helped change the face of nature-based tourism in Africa.
